Singer-songwriter Andrea von Kampen recently returned to her home in Lincoln, Nebraska, from a trip to Portland, Oregon, where she filmed the official video for one of her songs, “Portland,” a track from her first full-length album, Old Country.
With two EPs and some healthy recognition for those works, von Kampen has been focused for the past year on completing Old Country, which will be released on February 8, 2019. The singer-songwriter says she took her writing to a deeper level when it came to her new album.
“I started writing the record last fall and wrote it over the course of the fall and winter of 2017/2018. I knew I wanted a record that sounded more developed than my first two EPs, specifically the writing and the arranging of the songs. I worked to write songs that had more depth and meaning to them, and then collaborated with my brother David on the arrangements of the songs.”
“I was in my brother David’s workspace a few days ago, (he’s a composer), and I happened to see a William Faulker quote taped to his wall that said, “I only write when inspiration strikes. Fortunately, it strikes at nine every morning.” That made me laugh because that’s really how I try to approach writing now. It’s not flashy or exciting but it gets the job done. When I’m not touring or prepping for a specific show that is occupying my time, I try to write every single day like it’s a job. I have ideas for lyrics that come to me at all different times of the day, and I make a note of them and save them for my blocked out work time.”
Andrea von Kampen’s previous works include her EP Another Day (2015), and her second EP Desdemona (2016), both consisting of five tracks. The response to Andrea’s music has been very strong, with NPR listing von Kampen’s submission “Trainsong” to their Tiny Desk Contest in 2016 as one of their top ten finalists. Quoting NPR’s All Things Considered, “We were blown away.” Her music has surpassed 6 million streams on Spotify.
In October, Andrea went to Portland, Oregon to film her premier video for her track “Portland.”
“My friend Alexander Jeffery is an amazing filmmaker and we have collaborated before on numerous projects. When I sent him over the new single, “Portland” a few months ago he was certain that we needed to make a music video for the song. His idea was to fly out to Portland, shoot in the city, drive to the Oregon Coast and shoot, and then drive ALL the way back to Nebraska and shoot that too. It was an exhausting three days but totally worth it and I can’t wait for the video to be released!”
The singer-songwriter considers Lincoln, Nebraska as more than just the city where she lives; it is a place special to her and her music.
“Lincoln is a wonderful community that invests in their local businesses and artists. I’ve collaborated with Lincoln-based musicians on my records, Lincoln artists on my album artwork, Lincoln T-shirt designers for my band shirts, and so many others. I love coming back to Lincoln after a long tour and having the barista at my favorite coffee shop ask me how it went. It’s a special place that I feel grateful to live in.”
Von Kampen plans to promote her new album Old Country with a tour in February and March, hitting venues in South Dakota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio, New York, Massachusettes, and District of Columbia. (For tour details, visit https://www.andreavonkampen.com/tour).
