The 2nd annual Festival of Texas Fiddling will take place on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at the La Bahia Turn Verein, a dancehall and special event venue in Burton, Texas. A free kickoff party precedes the event on Friday, November 6, at Airway Dance Hall in the Stone Cellar in Round Top, Texas.
Excerpt about the festival from the official press release for the 2nd Annual Festival of Texas Fiddling:
“Day-long immersion into the art, craft and joy of the fiddle featuring workshops, showcases, jam sessions and concluding with an evening dance at the historic La Bahia Turn Verein in Burton, Texas”
Two organizations have collaborated to sponsor the festival: Texas Folklife and Texas Dance Hall Preservation, Inc.
For the past thirty years, the non-profit organization Texas Folklife has worked toward its goal of preserving and sharing the cultural heritage of Texas through special events and programs.
Texas Dance Hall Preservation, Inc.’s name is self-descriptive: since 2007 their mission has been to “save historic Texas dance halls and the authentic music and culture found in them. TDHP is the only statewide organization that is dedicated to preserving the unique and defining traditions of the true Texas dancehalls.”
In addition to the dance and showcase performances, there will be workshops that will focus on various styles and subject surrounding fiddle playing, including rare vintage fiddle songs, Texas-Polish music, traditional music on Texas bass fiddle, and Creole.
