Folk Alliance International (FAI), a nonprofit organization, was formed to “…nurture, engage and empower the international folk music community — traditional and contemporary, amateur and professional — through education, advocacy and performance.” -mission statement of Folk Alliance International
The organization consists of folk musicians and others in the folk music industry from around the world who are involved in the promotion, sales, and preservation of all kinds of folk music and dance.
FAI is headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri. Their featured event is the annual Conference, to be held February 17-21, 2016 in the same city. (The location of the Conference will take place in Kansas City Missouri until 2018, when in that year it will be held in Canada.)
Excerpt from the Folk Alliance International website:
“The Folk Alliance International Conference is the world’s largest gathering of the Folk music industry and community (crossing a diverse array of genres including Blues, Bluegrass, Roots, Celtic, Cajun, Appalachian, Traditional, World, and Singer-Songwriter).
The annual February conference (now in its 28th year) draws over 2,000 artists and industry (agents, managers, publishers, labels, festival/venue presenters, promoters, media) dedicated to folk music. Delegates who attended the 2015 conference represented the over 20 countries including the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Scandinavia, Continental Europe, Mexico, and Japan.”
Folk Alliance International services members from the United States, Mexico and Canada, including territories of these nations. Its aim in a more global function is to provide noncompetitive reciprocating networking opportunities for its members with others in the global folk music community.
Other events are sponsored at the discretion of the five regional chapters of the FAI, including their own respective annual conferences which are held at other times of the year. Each regional chapter represents a section of the United States, Canada and Mexico. These regions are SWRFA, FARM, SERFA, FAR-West and NERFA.
The events and benefits of membership are so numerous, it’s best to visit the websites of FAI and its regional chapters for more information.
